J.B. Nijhof A.A.

I am in process of arranging a large and important international vestment exhibition for The Art Institute of Chicago which will open the middle of November of this year. I enclose one of our form letters which will explain the exhibition in further detail.

When I recently saw Eline van Leeuwen at the Aartsbisschoppelijk Museum in Utrecht she mentioned that I should by all mean contact you as I would very much like to include the Chasuble of Leveroy in this exhibition. A great many items are coming from Utrecht, the Aartsbisschoppelijk Museum and several from the Rijksmuseum. I would hope that the Chasuble of Leveroy could be included in this shipment which will be accompanied by someone from the Aartsbisschoppelijk Museum in Utrecht.

I look forward to hearing from you as to whether or not it will be possible to include this fine item in our forthcoming exhibition. As I am very much pushed for time at the moment in regard to catalogue information and photographs, I would welcome hearing from you as soon as possible.

With best regards,

Sincerely yours,

Christa C. Mayer-Thurman (Mrs.)                                                                                                                       Curator                                                                                                                                                                   Department of Textiles

The Art Institute of Chicago has received a matching National Endowment Grant to help support a very large and hopefully important international vestment exhibition with an accompanying catalogue. The exhibition is scheduled to open November 11th, 1975, to be on view for two months, until and through January 18th, 1976. It will concern itself with items worn and used within the Western Church.

It is in regard to this exhibition that I am writing to you today in the hope that you may either know or have under your care pieces which should be included in such a major undertaking. The pieces will only be shown in Chicago as the exhibition will not travel. All insurance and packing costs will be taken care of by The Art Institute of Chicago. A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition.

I would welcome hearing from you with possible suggestions of important items within your collection which might be candidates for such a showing. A most conservation oriented installation is planned, taking the damaging effects of light, dust and touch fully into account.

All American institutes which do have material of this kind are lending to the exhibition and so will a great many European museums or private collectors.
